Raising Kids with Books, Tech & Nothing – 16 Novemer

Despite what we know, what we have these days, many still say, ‘things were different/better/simpler before.’ What is making the difference? Is it what we have, or what we do, or how we see? This evening will be a discussion about these things with someone familiar with the science of the head and the heart. The tradition and the modern.

Omar Mahmood was born and raised in Southern California. He completed his undergraduate studies in Psychobiology and Arabic. He then traveled overseas to study traditional Islamic Sciences at Dar al-Mustafa, in the Yemeni valley of Hadramawt. His studies focused on jurisprudence, Arabic grammar, and sciences of the heart. After returning to the States, he completed a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology and is currently employed as a neuropsychologist. He serves as a national advisor for MYNA (Muslim Youth of North America) and is a Board Member of Access California Services (a non-profit social services agency assisting Arab and Muslim communities in southern California).

Story man and rock fan Khalid Ajmain runs Sout Ilaahi in Singapore. Among other things, annually they organize Sacred Path of Love conference. This year Kuala Lumpur will be the host.

His research interest is in S.M.N Al-Attas’ conception of the West, encompassing the origins of the worldview of the West, its philosophical, cultural and religious roots, and how this worldview is impacting the world.

The spiritual journey include many routes. A number of the great spiritual figures in history, paid great attention what they ate, how it was prepared and where it came from. What’s the connection? How do we live this history in this day and age?

Permaculture is an approach to life, which significantly include food and in its application, many who try find their spiritual well-being getting better. Geoff and Nadia Lawton are among the top gurus of Permaculture today and have achieved and proven many amazing things through their work.

Geoff Lawton is a world renowned permaculture consultant, designer and teacher. He first took his Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC) Course in 1983 with Bill Mollison, widely considered the “father of permaculture.” Geoff has undertaken thousands of jobs teaching, consulting, designing, administering and implementing, in 6 continents and over 50 countries around the world. Clients have included private individuals, groups, communities, governments, aid organizations, non-government organisations and multinational companies, including:

  • consultancy in the environmentally green, Masdar City in the United Arab Emirates
  • development work from the Greening the Desert projects in Jordan
  • rehydration strategies in the deserts of Hadramaut, Yemen
  • housing projects for the Kurds in Iraq after the war, rebuilding an entire village with 53 straw bale houses

He has currently educated over 15,000 students in Permaculture worldwide. Geoff has established permaculture demonstration sites that function as education centres in all the world’s major climates — information on the success of these systems is networked through www.permacultureglobal.org. Geoff established the Permaculture Research Institute and the www.permaculturenews.org website to network mainframe information worldwide.

Nadia completed her PDC in the Dead Sea Valley in 1999 then proceeded to work on the “Green the Desert” project and establish permaculture women’s groups and school projects with this work. As reference she went on to complete her permaculture diploma in design, education and site development and registered as a permaculture teacher in English and Arabic with the Bill and Lisa Mollison’s permaculture Institute of Australia.

Nadia now lives in The Channon in Northern New South Wales, Australia at Zaytuna Farm the home of the Australian Permaculture Research Institute. Since 2003 she has been working with PRI as an international permaculture teacher, consultant and aid worker.

Mus’ab/Luke Penfound, 30 years old, fasted two Ramadhans in hometown Manchester before becoming Muslim at age 18.
For the most part of the last 10 years, Penfound has been living in Tareem, Hadhramout, Yemen. This is where he studies and teaches under the tutelage of Habib Omar Bin-Hafidh with particular focus in the classical arts of inward purification.
He has taught in the UK, Middle East and East Africa. He is also a Trustee for the Rafa Charitable Organisation International and holds a degree in Language and History from the University of Manchester.
Since then he has developed his interest on the spiritual aspect of Islam as well as fine cups of coffee – Abu Flat White as some might call him.

Dr Omar Mahmood double-majored in Psychobiology and Arabic and then studied Islamic Sciences in the traditional seminary Dar al-Mustafa, Tareem, Hadhramout. He holds a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology and is currently a research scientist at the University of California, San Diego.

He serves as a national advisor to the Muslim Youth of North America. He promotes the development of Islamic identity in Muslim youth through spirituality, counseling, recreation, and the arts.
